Moving day snuck up on me. Thankfully, Pepper and Rose had volunteered to help. Mama insisted on helping out, too—but only if she got to drive the moving truck. Zephyr amused herself during the commotion by racing around in circles, not letting silly things like walls and traffic stop her from a good old-fashioned frolic.

“Mama, watch out for that car—” I shut my eyes and felt suddenly closer to God.

Mama braked sharply. “Quiet, girl. I’ve been driving since before you were a twinkle in your father’s eye.”

The contents of the moving truck slid loudly in the trailer, then stopped with a crash that shook the cab.

“At this rate we might as well open the hatch and let it all fly out. There won’t be anything left in one piece by the time we get to the house.”

“Ain’t my fault some fool changed lanes without putting on his turn signal.” Mama took both hands off the wheel to adjust her sunglasses.

We arrived at the shotgun house and found the girls waiting on the front porch. Zephyr bounded happily across the tiny lawn.

Pepper waved enthusiastically. “Hey, Mama!”

Mama considered Pepper and Rose her honorary children. She embraced Pepper, then turned to Rose. “Rose, when’re you going to stop wearing all that black and put on some color?”

A ghost of a smile flitted across Rose’s face. “Next week, Mama. I promise.”

It was a running gag with the two of them.

“Y’all want to have some lemonade before we unload the truck?” I unlocked the door and ushered the three of them in.

Mama stopped in the living room with her hands on her hips. “Well, isn’t this real pretty?”

“Oh, wow,” said Pepper.

Rose wandered down the hall. “You got a pool out here?”

“Just a little bitty one. But big enough to take a dip.”

Mama and Pepper followed Rose down the hall. They crowded around the back door to peer out the window.

Zephyr ran straight through the lot of them and disappeared outside.

I got the lemonade out of the refrigerator and filled up glasses with ice. By the time they’d satisfied their curiosity by opening every door, closet, and cabinet in the house, I had their drinks ready. “Guess we’ll sit on the floor.”

Mama remained standing by the bar. “If I sit on the floor, Luella, you all might need a forklift to get me back up again.”

Rose slid down the wall to sit cross-legged on the floor.

Pepper sat on the floor and stretched in between sips of lemonade.

“I got some news from London.”

Mama narrowed her eyes and set her glass on the bar with a thunk. “Do tell.”

“She said Queenie wouldn’t put her in my vacant position. She thinks—”

“She thinks!” Mama scoffed.

I shot her a pointed look over the interruption and continued. “She thinks Queenie is keeping the job open for some reason. Maybe Queenie wanted me out of the way temporarily. Maybe she’s waiting for the right time to bring me back, once whatever it is has been taken care of.”

Mama rolled her eyes. “London has more money than sense.
